Neighborhood

Julianadorp is a neighborhood full of character, history and tropical architectural splendor! Founded by Shell in the late 1920s, it originally served as a home base for foreign workers, with 40 charming semi-detached homes built specifically for maritime personnel. The neighbourhood, located along the road to the former Shell bunker port of Bullenbaai, started as an exclusive and safe community.

In the period 1945-1955, Julianadorp flourished into a fully-fledged residential area with spacious, modern villas that exude the luxury of that time. The well-thought-out urban design divided the houses into three residential groups on higher grounds, with green strips in between where schools, a youth centre, a supermarket and sports facilities found their place. This created a vibrant, climate-conscious living environment, which is why Julianadorp is now known as a “monument of tropical architecture and urbanism.”

From the 1960s onwards, Julianadorp gradually transformed into an open, dynamic neighbourhood, with Shell selling the homes to private individuals. Although the original infrastructure such as fire hydrants, street lighting and signage has largely been preserved, the district is now fully accessible. The characteristic St. Michielsweg, once an important thoroughfare, is now closed on the Bullenbaai side, adding to the tranquility of the area.

Today, Julianadorp offers a beautiful mix of carefully maintained houses, renovated villas and, in a few places, buildings that are waiting for a loving restoration. The spacious plots, surrounded by mature trees, offer privacy and space. Most of the plots are fenced for security, without detracting from the original atmosphere of the neighborhood.

Julianadorp consists of various neighborhoods, such as Oud Julianadorp with high-rise buildings, cozy bungalows, luxury resorts and parts that have been allocated to Dutch defense personnel. Although the original facilities such as sports facilities, bus stops and shops have disappeared, Julianadorp remains an example of well-thought-out, tropical urban planning. The district’s schools are central and offer options for both public and private education, making Julianadorp a popular residential area for families.

In Julianadorp you breathe the history of a first-class neighbourhood, combined with modern conveniences and an unparalleled tropical charm. For those looking for a unique living experience where history, space and comfort come together, Julianadorp is the place to live!
