The land Steenrijk was purchased on May 20th 1804 and described as a "piece of land", which means that it concerned a plot with at most straw huts or no houses at all. For a long time, Steenrijk remained predominant forest, but this changed with the rapid rise of the oil industry in the early decades of the twentieth century, with the associated large immigration and the resulting acute housing shortage.
